Wiring Wizard & Port Calculator

Use our wiring assistant for easy speaker and subwoofer connections! The correct connection is important for your amplifier! Low-impedance operation can damage the amplifier! The datasheet shows you which connection each amplifier is designed for!

Our port calculator shows you the tuning characteristics of your enclosure! The net volume is always particularly important here; calculate the subwoofer’s actual resonant chamber volume beforehand to get the correct result. The net volume is calculated by subtracting all dead spaces and is crucial for enclosure design.

The legendary BRAX MATRIX speaker series—which has long been synonymous with the highest level of sound quality—is now expanding with the addition of the ML8 SUB. Designed and manufactured with the same uncompromising standards as all BRAX speakers, it is dedicated to achieving acoustic perfection.

Precision in Perfection
For years, our BRAX subwoofer has been the benchmark for precision and unconditionally controlled bass reproduction. This made the task of creating a BRAX subwoofer that delivers abyssal depth of detail without compromise—even in the smallest possible enclosures—all the more challenging. Every component of this exceptional subwoofer is not only designed for dynamics and perfect tonal balance, but is also engineered to convert even the highest amplifier power into sound pressure without compression.

MicroSphere – a material for two conflicting requirements
The demand for maximum membrane stiffness combined with the highest possible internal damping is akin to squaring the circle —yet the unique “MicroSphere” coating, in which ceramic micro-hollow spheres with a diameter of just 75 µm are embedded in a polymer layer and applied to the diaphragm, makes the impossible possible. It gives the hand-formed cone the highest level of acoustic precision for unparalleled sound reproduction.

Timeless Elegance
The clean, minimalist design is the hallmark of every BRAX product—the ML8 SUB adheres to this philosophy without compromise. The combination of the finest materials is further emphasized by the optionally available MR8 stainless steel ring, machined from a solid block, which can be used as a mounting ring or to hold the grille, depending on the installation position. The ML8 SUB is, of course, delivered in an elegant wooden box and comes with its own serial number, which is recorded in a service database.

Features:

  • An exceptionally rigid, hand-made paper diaphragm with an innovative “MicroSphere” coating consisting of ceramic micro-hollow spheres embedded in a polymer layer enables superior impulse response
  • Specially shaped rubber bead for maximum linear diaphragm travel
  • 2 x 2-ohm dual voice coil with an exceptionally wide winding width for maximum cone excursion and minimal distortion
  • Large, shielded ventilation openings in the pole piece and basket ensure optimal cooling of the voice coils and minimize compression effects
  • Specially designed, aerodynamically optimized, and exceptionally sturdy die-cast aluminum basket
  • An extremely powerful and precision-engineered magnet system for optimal linear magnetic flux
  • Heavy-duty terminal blocks for large cable cross-sections

Our specifications for the net volumes of closed enclosures always refer to an empty enclosure without any insulation material. The net volumes can be reduced if the interior of the enclosure is filled completely but loosely (not packed tightly) with suitable materials.
The following materials can be used for insulation:

  • Polyester wadding allows for a volume reduction of up to 5%
  • Mineral wool or rock wool can reduce volume by up to 10%
  • Sheep's wool can reduce volume by up to 20%

Note:
Insulating bass-reflex enclosures (provided they are used exclusively in the bass range up to 150 Hz) is counterproductive because the insulation material generally reduces the effectiveness of the bass-reflex port.

Frequently asked questions about the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB speaker

Is the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB suitable for door installation?

With an outer diameter of 222 mm and an installation depth of just 95.6 mm, the 200 mm woofer fits into many door assemblies. However, this speaker only reaches its full potential in a correctly dimensioned sealed enclosure – so be sure to also check the available air space behind the door panel before fitting.

What is the impedance of the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB?

The impedance is based on a 2 x 2 ohm dual voice coil with an exceptionally wide winding for maximum cone excursion and minimal distortion. This configuration allows flexible connection to either 1 ohm or 4 ohms, thereby adapting the connection to different power amplifiers.

How many watts can the ML8 SUB handle?

The ML8 SUB is, of course, designed to withstand high continuous loads: 400 watts RMS and up to 800 watts peak power. Protected ventilation openings in the pole piece and basket ensure optimum cooling of the voice coils and minimise compression effects – even under continuous load, sound quality remains at the very highest level.

What enclosure tuning is recommended for the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB?

The ML8 SUB is designed for a sealed enclosure: optimum net volume 17 litres, minimum 10 litres. The manufacturer does not provide any tuning specifications for bass-reflex enclosures. As a general rule regarding the damping of bass-reflex enclosures: whilst it reduces the required net volume, it tends to be counterproductive for pure bass applications up to 150 Hz, as it weakens the effect of the reflex port.

Which manufacturer makes the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB?

The subwoofer is manufactured by Audiotec Fischer – developed and manufactured with the same uncompromising standards as all BRAX speakers in the legendary BRAX MATRIX speaker series. Every component of this exceptional subwoofer is built with the aim of achieving acoustic perfection.

What are the differences between the ML8 SUB, ML8 MID and MATRIX ML10?

The ML8 SUB is designed to deliver controlled bass reproduction in a 20-cm format, whilst the ML8 MID covers the mid-range. With its larger diameter, the MATRIX ML10 offers more cone area for lower frequencies.

How does the ML8 SUB achieve such precise bass reproduction?

The requirement for maximum diaphragm rigidity combined with the highest possible internal damping is achieved by the ‘MicroSphere’ coating: The exceptionally rigid, hand-made paper cone, onto which the ceramic micro-hollow spheres are applied, is designed for dynamic performance and perfect tonal balance, enabling optimum impulse response. As such, this BRAX subwoofer is regarded as the benchmark for precision and uncompromisingly controlled bass reproduction.

How should the BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB be positioned?

Store the subwoofer in a dry place at room temperature to protect the cone and surround in the long term. The ML8 SUB is, of course, supplied in an elegant wooden case – when it comes to storage, too, it is worth combining the finest materials with a protected, dry environment to ensure that the material properties remain stable throughout the product’s entire lifespan.

BRAX MATRIX ML8 SUB - Here's what our expert has to say
