An 18-inch subwoofer has a cone diameter of 46 cm. The enclosure itself is significantly larger and, depending on the bass reflex tuning, ranges from 80 to 120 cm in height, with similar width and depth.

The optimal subwoofer size depends on your intended use. 18-inch subwoofers deliver extremely deep bass down to 25 Hz and are perfect for large PA systems. For smaller rooms, 12-inch models or 15-inch subwoofers may be sufficient, while festival systems often combine several 18-inch models.

An enclosure that's too large results in mushy, imprecise bass and reduced efficiency. The cone can't work optimally, which wastes power. Professional manufacturers like Sundown Audio or Ground Zero tune their bass reflex enclosures precisely to match the speakers installed.

The RMS power you need depends on your application. For mobile DJ setups, 500-1000 watts is often enough, while large PA systems with multiple subwoofers can handle up to 15,000 watts per unit. Important: the amplifier should deliver about 80% of the subwoofer's power handling.

Make sure the impedance matches (usually 8 ohms) and use an active crossover for optimal separation. The subwoofer should operate below 80-120 Hz, while your tops cover the range above that. With passive models, you'll need a separate amplifier with the appropriate power.
