Subwoofers come in standard sizes of 8, 10, 12, 15, and 18 inches. 10-inch subwoofers offer the ideal balance between compact dimensions and powerful bass. They require less enclosure volume than larger models like 15-inch subwoofers and deliver tighter bass than smaller variants.

A subwoofer in your car is fundamentally legal. However, the volume must stay within the legal limits – a maximum of 55 dB during the day and 40 dB at night in residential areas. During traffic stops, your sound system must not distract the driver from traffic or drown out warning signals.

The optimal power depends on your intended use. For normal listening, 200-250 watts RMS is more than enough. Demanding listeners opt for 500-watt models for powerful bass. More important than the raw wattage are efficiency, impedance, and matching with the amplifier. For extreme bass requirements, larger 18-inch models with higher power handling are also a great option.

Sealed enclosures with a volume of 15-25 liters deliver precise, controlled bass. Ported (bass reflex) enclosures need 25-35 liters but play louder and deeper in return. The most common impedances are 2 and 4 Ohm. Most amplifiers run stably and efficiently at 4 Ohm. 2 Ohm versions pull more power from the amplifier but put more strain on it. Check your amplifier's rated impedance and choose a matching woofer.

High-quality 10-inch subwoofers achieve a frequency range of 25-30 Hz to 500 Hz. The lower cutoff frequency depends on the driver, enclosure, and power handling. With optimal tuning and sufficient amplifier power, even compact 10-inch woofers can produce impressively deep bass.
